The simulation of interacting quantum systems has always been one of the grand challenges for computational physics, with important questions such as:
 
 
 
* what is the mechanism behind superconductivity in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors? Why can we achieve superconductivity at about 160 K but currently not at room temperature?
 
 
 
* what is the phase diagram of strongly correlated materials? How can we understand the complicated structural phases of materials close to a Mott transitions, such as transition metal oxides and actinides?
 
 
 
* do exotic phases such as "supersolids" -- which are crystalline solids but at the same time show frictionless flow like a perfect liquid -- exist?
 
 
 
* are there materials or realistic models exhibiting nonabelian anyonic excitations, which could be used to implement error-free and robust topological quantum computers that will not suffer from decoherence and will not require error correction schemes?
 
 
 
 
 
The simulations of models pertaining to these questions has always been one of the grand challenges of supercomputing  but has rarely taken center stage in the past decades, compared to other fields like protein folding or climate modeling, since the computational effort required for realistic simulations of strongly interacting quantum systems has exceeded that of past supercomputers and only simplified models could be studied.
 
 
 
Significant algorithmic developments over the past decade combined with petaflop-scale supercomputers will soon open the way to realistic large-scale simulations of these topics, but scaling the algorithms to tens of thousands of processor cores will require a concerted research and development effort.
 
 
 
We thus plan to hold an international workshop, brining together the experts on development and implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms for the simulation of correlated quantum systems. The goals are to
 
 
 
* review the application areas and identify a number of key "demonstration problems" that can be tackled on petaflop-scale computers.
 
 
 
* identify the best algorithms currently known and to prepare a document summarizing the state-of-the art in the various simulation methods. The purpose of this document will be both to guide our own further developments and to provide guidelines to other groups entering the field.
 
 
 
* review the challenges posed by scaling these simulation algorithms to petaflop computers and to develop ideas for better scalable algorithms.
 
 
 
* discuss implementation and optimization issues for these algorithms on petaflop-sale supercomputers, and initiate a project for a joint code-base for core common subroutines.
 
 
 
* initiate collaborative development of simulation algorithms for the "demonstration problems"
